An Editorial

I rarely editorialize on this blog, but something is bothering me so much that I felt compelled to share that botheration with the world.  There is an irritating practice going on right now on the highways at night (and sometimes during the day): people, especially people in trucks, leaving their high beams on ALL THE TIME.
This practice, as I said, is especially prevalent in people driving trucks.  Now, as we all know, trucks are mainly driven by persons of rural derivation, persons who revel in the feel of dirt between their fingers.  People who listen to Country music.  Now, it was my understanding that these are the same people who are so concerned with "family values" and traditional beliefs about respect for your fellow man and all that shit.  However, they show no respect when they leave their bright headlights on all the time.
My theory is that it's some kind of protest, some kind of assertion of their manhood.  The reason I think this is because of a related trend: they add lights to the truck below the original ones that come on when the top ones are dimmed.  That way, if they do switch to low beams, the effect is negated.  It's like they believe that dimming their lights is akin to bowing down to another person.  That's what it is really.  It's a pride thing.  It also shows just how stupid rednecks are.

I found this picture in an old issue of Smithsonian.  Somebody used it somewhere for something else.  Maybe it's on an album cover?  Does anybody know what it is?  I ask, even though I realize that no one will ever respond to my query.  No one has ever contacted me in regard to this blog.   Don't you think that's a little strange?

Summary of Doodlenose Events So Far

Since Doodlenose is becoming too complicated for a new reader to just jump right into, given that scrolling back through months of strips is a pain in this blog format, I've decided to start doing periodic summaries to explain what's going on. This is the first one.
"Doodlenose" takes place in a universe in which all of the various worlds are connected by a series of tunnels. This tunnel system was once the exclusive domain of the vast Postal Monopoly Cult Empire. Toadsgoboad, the strip's main character and a representation of myself, overthrew the Postal Empire years ago and took over the tunnel system, ruling from his secret laboratory in Bangertine. However, with the destruction of the Empire, knowledge of it, the tunnel system, and even of the other worlds has been forgotten by the peoples of the Doodlenose universe.
Toadsgoboad and his imaginary, though corporeal, friend Jerry Lancaster have decided to end their days of constant adventure and take jobs on a puppet show based on Toadsgoboad's comic-strip-within-a-comic-strip, "Waction 74." Lear Peony, head writer for the show, although initially enthusiastic about working with Toadsgoboad, has started to sour on him. She has gone home to the apartment she shares with her boyfriend to complain about the situation when she is interrupted by a phone call from her mother.
